Course Description:

RATIONALE


The module aims to develop student knowledge and critical understanding around the social, psychological, and cultural influences that underpin health decision-making. It engages with published evidence and psychological models and theories to enable students to better understand the factors that drive health behaviors, as well as key approaches for enabling positive behavior change.

AIMS


1. Introduce students to the impact of social, psychological and cultural influences on health behaviors.
2. Provide an understanding of the principles, methods and theoretical approaches to the promotion of health and prevention of disease through behavior change.
3. Enable students to engage with the principal methods and theoretical approaches to the evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of health promotion programmes and interventions.
4. To help prepare students to apply their learning about theories and methods of health promotion to their professional practice.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES
 

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:


1. Critically engage with the role of social, psychological, and cultural influences on health behaviours.

2. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of key models, concepts and principles relating to risk behaviour and the promotion of health.
3. Critically explore and evaluate a range of strategies and techniques evidenced to enhance the effective communication of health promotion messages.
4. Select and review appropriate material and approaches for implementation and evaluation of an effective health promotion intervention to a specified population.
