Course Description:
RATIONALE
Academic and Study Skills aims at introducing students to academic skills and the realities of online education, enabling them to achieve success when facing online-specific barriers as well as common academic hurdles. It introduces the resources and support services available as well as renders students able to use the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) effectively and confidently. Students thus become independent and active learners aware of the core values and expectations of academic culture as well as ways to tailor their online learning experience to their personal strengths, needs, and learning preferences.
AIMS
The overarching aims of the module are as follows:
- Introduce students to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and its collection of
- integrated tools;
- Develop students’ study skills;
- Render students competent in researching and incorporating literary sources into their writing;
- Enable students to structure and construct clear, coherent arguments in academic writing;
- Enhance their critical and reflective skills in reading and writing;
- Increase learner independence.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Use the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) tools effectively;
2. Understand the meaning of academic integrity and avoid plagiarism when incorporating scholarly sources into their own writing;
3. Structure and construct clear, coherent arguments in academic writing;
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of different types of writing.
