Administrative Law

RATIONALE
This module builds on the Constitutional Law module by developing knowledge and understanding of Administrative Law. In particular, the module will focus on proceedings in the High Court for judicial review covering preliminary issues such as standing and time limits, grounds and remedies. The module will examine both the traditional grounds of judicial review as well as those under the Human Rights Act 1998. Alternatives to court proceedings will also be examined including complaints mechanisms, ombudsman and public inquiries. Extensive use of case studies will refine students’ ability to apply the law to factual scenarios. 

AIMS
Through the completion of this module students will:
●    Evaluate the different methods of challenging administrative decision-making.
●    Understand the procedural and substantive aspects of judicial review.
●    Demonstrate how to apply administrative law to factual scenarios.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
1.    Assess and apply the principles of judicial review in the resolution of legal problems in public law.
2.    Assess and apply the Human Rights Act 1998 to the resolution of legal problems.
3.    Critically evaluate the different methods of challenging administrative decision-making and the different elements of judicial review.
