Course Description:
RATIONALE
The Independent Project module provide students an opportunity to extend their studies in
particular fields of interest that will help further their future career aspirations in Computer Science. Within this module, students should identify a suitable topic or subject area within the domain of computer science. Students will develop the topic by conducting research in the form of an independent project. This module will provide students the opportunity to develop self-awareness in regards to their personal strengths and weaknesses by; understanding the applications of the chosen subject area, solving problems and providing creative solutions to these problems and being aware of ethical and moral codes of practice while conducting a practical or research-oriented project in Computer Science.
AIMS
The overarching aims of the module are as follows:
- Apply literature search and review in Computer Science and related fields
- Clearly define appropriate research questions, aims and objectives
- Effectively design a research project with the use of appropriate tools and methodologies
- To evaluate, discuss and reflect on the outcomes of the research and the importance of these outcomes
- Adopt the appropriate ethical guidelines in both conducting research and applying academic research standards.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key principles within the Computer Science discipline
- Appreciate and evaluate the capabilities of existing and emerging technologies in the field of computer systems such as networking, databases, programming languages, operating systems, data science, web technologies, artificial intelligence, computer architecture and organization or artificial intelligence.
- Understand how to conduct research in Computer Science (CS) and demonstrate effective written communication skills
- Develop a range of research based and interdisciplinary skills including; analysis, interpretation, written expression, presentation, formal report writing and self- man-aged study
- Make self-determined decisions concerning the applicability of their chosen subject area that can help further their personal career goals and aspirations
